Be the One Others Confess Their Excuses To…

For those who are dedicated to the grind, there is a strange phenomenon that occurs. As you drip sweat, squat your ass to the floor, struggle to finish a rep, wearing a vest, swinging a bell, pulling an erg, digging your own hole…

…They lurk, pretending not to pay attention…

They are.

They know you were in the gym before their alarm went off.

They know you were alone, in the dark, chalk under your nails, fighting against gravity, complacency, and obscurity.

They know that you are the one who turned the lights on in the gym. Your effort brought light into the dark space.

It’s not jealousy that they feel. It’s the evil twin of jealousy. You make these shadow dwellers confront their own weakness.

Excuses are a person’s way of rationalizing their own weakness.

They wanted to work out this morning.

They are going to start Monday.

Maybe after the holiday…

If it wasn’t for that bum knee…

Or that lower back pain…

Or time, there just isn’t enough…

And there you are.

It’s always awkward during their confession. There is no formula for when it typically happens. Sometimes it’s right after a workout, when you’re trying to reel your lungs back in. Sometimes it happens in a hallway, or the break room, or as you pass by their desk…

They need to confess.

For some reason, your ability to transcend the resistance and grind draws out their excuse.

Be the impetus for change in another human.

You are already the example. Be the conduit. Listen to the reasons why, nod your head and tell them…

”I’ll be here tomorrow.”
